Stan Byrdy

The dean of Augusta sportscasters, Stan brings 30 years of broadcast experience to NBC Augusta News. He has covered the Masters Golf Tournament since Jack Nicklaus’ historic win in 1986.

An authority on the history of golf in Augusta, Stan is the author of two books (The Augusta National Golf Club: Alister MacKenzie’s Masterpiece, Ann Arbor Media, 2005; Augusta and Aiken in Golf’s Golden Age; Arcadia Publishing, 2002) and speaks frequently on the subject.

Stan has received many awards for his sportscasts in Augusta:
Best Local TV Sports Personality in the Augusta Magazine Readers Poll 11 years concurrently, from 1986-1994, and again in 2007 and 2008. And Best Local TV Sportscaster of 2008 by the Metro Spirit newspaper.

The Associated Press honored him in 2008 in the Sportscast category and for his reporting on the Georgia-Alabama football game. In 2007 Stan was cited for his high school football coverage on NBC Augusta's Friday Night Lights program.

The AP also awarded him Best Sportscast in 1995 for “Football Friday Night” and Best Sports Report in 1994 for his story "Long Drive Golfer."

The Georgia Association of Broadcasters awarded him Best Sports Report in 1995 for his story “Bizarre Baseball.”

And United Press International awarded him for Best Sports Report in 1986 for “Beat the Byrdman.”

A graduate of Youngstown State University, Stan anchored weekend sports for WYTV-TV in Youngstown while attending YSU. He was also the Sports Director at KJCT-TV in Grand Junction, CO, KLDH-TV in Topeka, KS and was a sports anchor and reporter for KOLR-TV in Springfield, MO.

Most local viewers remember him from his years as sports director at WJBF-TV in Augusta where he worked from 1985-1994.

Stan serves as co-director of the Marybeth Regan Memorial Golf Tournament at Forest Hills Golf Course and he's an active member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church.
