Augusta, GA – Shepeard Community Blood Center is very low on types A-, B- and B+. In order to meet the needs of patients in our local hospitals, all donors of those types are asked to come to our centers or our mobile locations today. The location of our mobile drives can be found at shepeardblood.org.
It is estimated that the on-hand supply of these blood types will not meet the demand of the 16 local hospitals Shepeard serves. Only 6% of the population has type A- blood, 2% have B- and 10 % have B+ type blood. With only 37% of the population eligible to donate blood, this particular need is urgent.
One donation typically takes less than an hour but can save up to three local lives. Donors are asked to come to one of the four local centers or mobile units today.

Sometimes just a teaspoonful of blood can save an infants life.
Every two seconds someone needs blood and 1 out of every 10 people admitted to a hospital needs blood. Although 37% of the population can donate, less than 10% do annually. Anyone who is in good health, or 17 years or older, and weighs at least 110 pounds may donate blood every 56 days.
Studies show that donating blood just three times a year may lower your blood pressure; reduce your risk of a heart attack by 50% and lower chances of developing colon, lung, bladder and esophageal cancers by 40%.
The need for blood is continuous and there is only one source from which to get it, volunteer blood donors. Citizens are urged to donate today and give the gift of life to 3 local people!
Ninety four percent of blood donors are registered voters.
