AN NOLLAIG: AN IRISH CHRISTMAS

One of the great innovators and pioneers in Celtic and World music genres, Celtic fiddle sensation Eileen Ivers performs An Nollaig: An Irish Christmas with the Augusta Symphony on Thursday, December 11. Ivers and her band perform traditional Celtic and holiday favorites with the Augusta Symphony, under the direction of Maestro Donald Portnoy. The program includes The Holly Tree, Planxty Loftus Jones, Wexford Carol Medley, River Dance, and Christmas Time is Here Again. The 7:30 p.m. concert is at Bell Auditorium on Telfair Street in downtown Augusta.

Tickets are $20, $30 and $40 and can be purchased online at www.augustasymphony.org or by calling 706.826.4705. Tickets may also be purchased at the door on concert evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Bell Auditorium box office. Full-time students and military personnel with valid I.D. can purchase any available seat for $7 on concert night only, subject to availability.

Heralded as the “future of the Celtic fiddle” by the Washington Post and “the Jimi Hendrix of the violin” by The New York Times, Eileen Ivers’ list of accomplishments and accolades is a testament to her musical talent. A nine time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion, Eileen Ivers has appeared with the London Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, Riverdance, Hall and Oates, Patti Smith, Paula Cole and has performed for presidents and royalty across the globe. Band members include Tommy McDonnell (lead vocals, harmonica, percussion); Buddy Connolly (accordion, whistles); Greg Anderson (acoustic guitar, bouzouki, backing vocals); and, Leo Traversa (bass guitar).

The daughter of Irish immigrants, Ivers grew up in the culturally diverse neighborhood of Bronx, New York. Rooted in Irish traditional music since the age of eight, Ivers won nine All-Ireland fiddle championships, a tenth on tenor banjo, and over 30 championship medals, making her one of the most awarded persons ever to participate in the prestigious competitions. Her dedication to Irish traditional music coupled with an interest in diverse musical genres representative of her New York childhood are the foundation for Ivers’ music. Her recording credits include over 80 contemporary and traditional albums and numerous movie scores.
