The Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History is proud to present the work of renowned self-taught artist John Daso. The Augusta, Ga., native combines Southern quintessence and vibrancy, with a spirit-driven purpose that illuminates the canvas. Daso is the first African American artist to own a gallery (DASO’s Gallery) in the historic French Quarter of Charleston. He has gained numerous recognitions and acclamations from South Carolina political figures such as Lieutenant Governor André Bauer, former Governor Jim Hodges, and current mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr.
Along with donating to charitable organizations and foundations, and exhibiting his work in various venues, including his most recent show in Manhattan, N.Y., entitled, “Daso in Manhattan 2009,” Daso is also committed to encouraging young individuals to further their artistic gifts through the Gifted Artists of America Center, Inc., in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., which he founded. The exhibition will run from July 1 through August 31.
Opening Reception: Sunday, July 12, 2009, 3:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
Costs: Adults $5; Seniors/Military $3; Students $2
Exhibition open during normal Museum operating hours.
