10 S.C. Senate Republicans call for Sanford to step down
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - At least 10 Republican South Carolina senators are calling for Gov. Mark Sanford to resign.
Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler of Gaffney said Tuesday's revelations from the governor about his own affair raise doubts about Sanford's ability to lead the state.
Five other senators joined him in a letter, while four more have told reporters they want to see the governor go.
In a lengthy, emotional interview with The Associated Press, Sanford described seven meetings with the woman he describes as his soul mate.
That includes two multi-night stays with her in New York, but said he is fit to remain in office.
Peeler says the governor has not been consistent in his story about liaisons with his Argentine mistress.
He also says the governor seems unfocused.
