NBC Augusta 26 News and Richmond County Schools have teamed up for a new campaign. It's called ‘Be There.’ Its purpose: to inspire more connections between parents and children in simple ways. Our first ‘Be There’ moment - a father and son flying to new heights together. Kites with Dads Day at Rollins Elementary lets kids be kids and parents, well, co-pilots. Five-year-old Ricky Rosas wants nothing more than a hand from his dad, Carlos, to see how high his Iron Man kite can go. “I hope he'll remember this, that me and him flew a kite one day. I hope he does,” Rosas said. For Carlos, this bonding time is worth much more than the hour it takes out of his day, something he wants other parents to remember before they say they're too busy. “Just try to make time, even if it's for 15 minutes. It'll be an experience you'll remember. The smile on his face, it means a lot,” he said. A simple play date, perhaps, but Carlos says it's another chance to show Ricky what dads are for. “It means trying to be his role model in a way. Trying to show him what's right or wrong and try to be an example. Somebody he can look up to. Be there for him whenever he needs me,” Rosas said. That's the magic of a day just right to fly a kite; forgetting it all for a moment, but somehow making memories of a lifetime in the midst of it all.
