“I think its all in fun it's what you make it out to be,” James Russell, a costume shopper, said.
“I've celebrated Halloween since I was little. All I see it as is going out and having some fun,” Matthew Clark, a high school student, said.
Opinions on Halloween vary widely, even at Party City where most people are looking for costumes or party supplies.
“In my household, we do not celebrate Halloween, we do have fall festivals at our church we have a fall festival at his school,” Tiera Bowen, a parent from Augusta, said.
“I take my kids trick or treating but it's not to worship the devil it's because they like dressing up and having fun,” Denise Clark, a parent from Aiken, said.
And many churches approach it differently, from the alternative activities to ignoring Halloween altogether.
“We don't do an alternative on Halloween day because I think that gives credence to the holiday,” Rev. Billy Atkins said.
Pastor Atkins at Fleming Baptist Church of Augusta says his church will hold regular services Wednesday and do a Fall Festival the following Saturday.
But he says it's up to each church and member to decide how to handle it.
“I would certainly not condemn another church or criticize another church because they have a Halloween alternative or festival. That's a difference in opinion, the main thing is we are together on the big issues,” Pastor Atkins said.
And while many people do decide to celebrate Halloween, a couple of things they say are important are a family atmosphere and safety first.
“We celebrate it just like Christmas. We get everybody together, the whole family, everybody gets involved with it,” Don Ridener, a dad from Augusta, said.
“I try to take my kids to the same area, people we know,” Clark, a mom from Aiken, said.
Faith plays a role in how many treat Halloween and Pastor Atkins says the spiritual aspect of your approach is important.
“When we say we believe in angels, we certainly do. But there's also a such thing as demons and forces of evil and they are very real. They are just as real as any part of our spiritual life and we have to be aware of that,” Pastor Atkins said.
