With troops continuing to wage battles with insurgents in Iraq, a local woman is sharing her story of similar battles 14 years ago.
Loretta Scott was an Army nurse during Operation Desert Storm. And she's sharing her story of faith... before during and after her time in the Middle East.
"I knew then that my mission really was to save souls there. So I knew my calling," Scott said.
It's a calling Loretta Scott writes about in her book "Yes I Can." That calling became apparent during one of Saddam Hussein's scud missile attacks on her base in Saudi Arabia.
"All of a sudden my whole life flashed before me. And I heard the voice of God say 'Oh ye of little faith. Would I have brought you this far to forsake you?' And I had this serene peace that came upon me."
Scott says she understands what soldiers fighting today are going through. And while they have a reputation of being tough on the battlefields, that doesn't mean soldiers don't carry their faith with them.
"We saw a lot of things. I saw a lot of things, but you just internalize it. You pray. You just hope for the better."
Their faith will be important not just while serving, but when they return home as well. Faith she says helped her write the book.
"My experience was not only to tell the side of what happened in the war, but especially when I came back to the states, I also had a war to go through. And having Christ in my life, that strengthened me to order my steps to where I am today."
And that includes her work as a nurse and an active duty member of the U-S Nurse's Corp. She says she now finds her ministry in the health care field -- encouraging people who have served their country are not feeling 100 percent.
