A small church in Plum Branch, South Carolina, has celebrated a milestone. Eula Bracknell has been playing the music at worship services there for 69 years.
For the better part of six decades, Eula Bracknell, 89, has been sitting in the sanctuary at Plum Branch Baptist Church, ministering to the congregation with music.
"It's really the highlight of the week for me. I love it and I love every member of the church," she said.
She was called into service in November of 1936 -- prompted by her mother-in-law a week after her marriage.
"She said now you've just finished school and you studied music all your life. You should be the one to play."
She's played ever since. And while 18 ministers have come and gone, she's remained a constant part of the worship service.
"Since I've been here, she's been an inspiration to me and the congregation because she's so faithful," said Rev. Darrell Engle.
The church recently recognized her years of service. Reverend Engle says they wanted her to know how much her work means to them.
"So many people when they reach retirement age, retire from the church activities. And she has continued to play regularly and we're very thankful," he said.
Mrs. Bracknell says she battles arthritis, but she says the fact she's able to play the piano is a gift from God. And she has no plans to give up her seat on Sunday mornings.
"As long as I'm able and as long as they want me, I'll do it," she said.
Mrs. Bracknell did try to retire after she has served 50 years as the church's musician. The membership asked her to reconsider and 19 years later, she continues to prepare for Sunday services.
