Gospel music can be found on the airwaves and on any given Sunday at church.
The New Generation Gospel Choir is a little different.
The Glenn Hills High School club is one of only three gospel choirs in the Richmond County School District.
Shadavia Dorsey is a junior at Glenn Hills and serves as the choir’s chaplain.
“I think it's so good we can have a gospel choir at school,” Dorsey said.
But this group of young singers is lifting more than their voices.
“We all help each other through our problems. We leave all problems at the door so we can sing, but afterwards, we help each other,” Roosevelt Johnson said.
“It's more than a choir; it's a family. We come together, we sing and praise the Lord and we try to minister to other people, make sure we get the word out into the school,” said Tiffany Partin, the choir president.
While most of their peers listen to rap and hip-hop, these teens say their sound is just as fun and even better, it comes with an inspirational message.
“It ministers to my heart and helps keep my faith strong,” said Cherelle Lynn, a senior choir member.
“Singing in the gospel choir helps me lift up my spirits. Sometimes, you might have a bad day, but when I come in here, I let go and let God help me out through my life,” said Larry Blue, a senior football player and choir member.
“Any trials you have, just listen to some gospel music and it will bring you through it. I know it's helped me a lot,” Partin said.
The New Generation Gospel Choir is having a Free Gospel Spring Explosion Concert, Saturday, April 14 at 5 p.m. at the Trinity Church next to Glenn Hills High School. The Hephzibah Gospel Choir and a Special Guest College Gospel Choir will also perform.
