The summer isn't necessarily a break from school for every kid; many attend week-long Vacation Bible School during the summer.

At Warren Baptist Church of Augusta, a team works to make the experience different and interesting every year.

This year, the church transformed to fit a sports theme.

The sanctuary looks more like an arena and on Open House Night, the atmosphere is best described as a worship pep rally.

“Our theme this year is Game Day Central. We learn about sports and we learn about God too and the Bible.” Rebecca Smeak said.

Smeak and her brother, Mitchell, are among more than 900 students attending the VBS activities at Warren this week.

The kids brought their parents in on Open House Night to see what they've been working on so far.

“I can't think of a better place for them to be for a week in the summer time with their friends in a loving, positive atmosphere,” Myra Smeak, their mother, said.

With 950 students participating, Warren Baptist set a new record for Vacation Bible School attendance.

Children's Ministry leader Connie Plummer says from the bible study to singing and dancing, everyone works hard to make the program unforgettable.

“Music that's really high energy, leaders who are really high energy and appeal to kids, that's been part of it. Just to help them have a great time and know their God can be the most exciting thing in their life,” Plummer said.

Mitchell, who's only seven-years-old, made a huge leap of faith this week at VBS.

“I asked God into my heart,” he said.

“It's an answer to prayer. We know he's made the most important decision he'll ever make in his life, so it's been a great week for the Smeak family,” his mom, Myra, said.

Nothing's set in stone yet, but next year's theme might involve the tropics and the Smeaks say, anything bringing families, friends and faith together works for them.

Several Vacation Bible Schools are scheduled around the area. Check with local churches in your area for dates and times.
