Many of us go to church, but how many can say the church comes to them?
Residents at Richmond Summit can and it all started with a woman holding bible study in her apartment.
Every week, Thankful Baptist Church takes its mission down the street to Richmond Summit Apartments.
“I love Richmond Summit and with Rev. Young coming here on Sundays preaching and ministering teaching us, it has improved a lot of things going on in here,” Mary Wolfe, the Tenants Association President, said.
“We had a vision to take the gospel which is the good news outside of the four walls of the church and really reach out into the community and really meet people where they were,” Pastor Gregory Young of Thankful Baptist Church said.
It all started five years ago when Elizabeth Grant and a friend invited neighbors over for Bible study. The meetings eventually outgrew her apartment.
“It got up to 20 people in my apartment, so I asked the Lord to send me somebody who wouldn't mind teaching me and he sent Pastor Young,” Grant said.
The group meets on Sundays and sometimes during the week, for worship, fellowship and prayer.
“We know housing and jobs are big issues with people in the community and we know a lot of folks have lost hope and we want to restore that hope,” Pastor Young said.
In a housing community that's made up of the disabled and elderly, these people say their renewed faith is fueling their energy for change and improvement.
“I have a prayer breakfast every third Monday and we have bible study we do all kinds of things in here we have bingo monthly, we have birthday parties, it's just wonderful here. I love it,” Wolfe said.
“Thankful Baptist Church is a wonderful church with wonderful people helping me and all the residents,” Annie Laura Vann, a resident of 21 years, said.
July 29th will be the second anniversary for Richmond Summit Ministries.
