Aiken County's 45th deadly traffic accident is serving as a somber reminder about highway safety.

It's estimated more than 62 million Americans will join you on the nation's highways and roadways this holiday season. But, are you ready for that daunting drive?

"We think about safety checks for ourselves. Think about for your vehicles," South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Scot Edgeworth said.

And just in case that holiday haul comes to a screeching halt.

"Never try to push your car out of the road because another vehicle will come behind you and might hit you," Trooper Edgeworth said.

Trooper Edgeworth says the smartest and safest option if you're broken down on the road is to leave the car and call for help.

"If you can get away from your vehicle, find a safe place to stand off the roadway," Edgeworth said.

Some of the most important cargo packed into your vehicle this holiday season should be an emergency kit and a reflective triangle.
