They seem like a bright idea and consume less power for the same amount of light.

And while compact fluorescents cost several times more than a normal bulb, they pay themselves off in energy savings.

But can they replace every bulb?

First, Chuck from Aiken wants to know, do the bulbs work in "light fixtures that are on a dimmer?"

"They didn't in the past, there's a new line coming out, a 3-way compact fluorescent that will work in dimmers," said Chris Prickett, a lighting specialist at Lowe's.

The next question concerns bulbs in refrigerators or ovens.

"Will the compact fluorescents work in extreme temperatures?" Chuck asked.

They don't have a whole lot to choose from right now in that type thing, because you are looking at a big difference in temperature fluctuation, so you should still use your standard (bulb), " said Prickett.

He says the best bet is to stick with normal, incandescent bulbs.

Chuck also wants to know what to do in lamps requiring smaller bulbs.

He asks "Do we stock up on replacements?"

Prickett says no, incandescent bulbs will be around for some time to come, but there might be a compact fluorescent to fit.

"Manufacturers are getting better at designing smaller sizes," he said.
