With all the nice weather we've been getting, it's a sure sign that spring is just around the corner.

But with spring comes the allergy season.

So, Chuck from Aiken wants to know when does the pine pollen season start and how bad will it be?

Chief Meteorologist Jeff Rucker says in our area, that pine pollen typically peaks in late March, but that our highest pollen counts overall typically occur in mid-March.

Pine pollen generally does not cause an allergic reaction. Because it is so heavy, pine pollen does not scatter in the wind as easily as other pollens do, so it rarely reaches human noses.

The amount of pine pollen on surfaces will depend on how much rain we receive during the peak of pollen output by pine trees.

The Healthy Living forecast is always on the weather section of NBCAugusta.com, which includes pollen, air quality, and UV index data.

"Because it is so heavy, pine pollen does not scatter in the wind as easily as other pollens do, so it rarely reaches human noses." This statement is wrong. For more than 100 years, many scientists have shown pine pollen travels 1000 km from source (Bessey 1883). NIH no longer posts this on its Web page either. Am willing to send independent scientific proof if you will kindly supply an email address for attachments.
