Summer is in full swing and many are enjoying their backyard pool, but along with the swimming, comes keeping it clean. Many viewers wanted to know if it's better to clean your pool with chlorine or salt.

No more burning eyes, brittle hair or dry itchy skin. There is a better way to clean your pool...salt. Experts say it works just as well as the traditional chlorine cleaner.

“Chlorine system is killing bacteria. A salt system is doing the same thing except you're using salt to convert into a chlorine based product. So it's actually one in the same just less chemical to operate the pool,” said Joe Crouch of Blue Wave Spa and Pool.

So the system still produces chlorine, but this version is more user-friendly and not nearly as harsh.

“With a salt system you'll actually have soft skin, soft hair,” said Crouch.

One time salt system user Joy Cook agrees.

“The salt system was a very good system as far as softness of the water and it is less irritating to your skin and hair,” said Cook.

According to Ashley Sanders of Leslie Pool Supply using sodium will also be softer on your pockets.

“The chlorine prices are not going to go down. They will continue to rise and in that case salt is actually a little bit friendlier on your checkbook,” said Sanders.

And putting in the system shouldn't be too tough. Professional instillation is recommended, but Sanders says it's probably not necessary.

“Its always recommended to have a professional due to the fact that you have to plumb it electrically but I had an 87-year old woman put it in herself,” said Sanders.

And once it's in you'll have a lot less work.

“With the salt system you can actually forget about it pretty easily. You get your salt level up, set the system to where you want and it produces chlorine,” said Sanders.

“I highly recommend the salt, it makes a better pool,” said Crouch.

There are a few other alternatives to traditional chlorine. One is ozone, but experts say it may not be as safe or effective.

There is actually a chlorine and salt free system out there. It is so much better for you pool. I really don't know why it's not more popular. It may be a little more than chlorine but we have enjoyed it so much more.
