GQ: Do substitute teachers get a pay raise since the minimum wage increased?

By Steve Kuzj skuzj@nbcaugusta.com

Tina from Columbia County wants to know now that minimum wage has gone up, why don't substitute teachers get a pay raise?

Substitute teachers have not received a raise this year, but the school board is working on a possible increase.

Currently in Richmond County, a beginning substitute with a high school diploma will make $50 a day, one with a college degree will make $60.

After subbing 15 classes, that pay increases to about $80 a day.

Seen where some schools are going to start paying teachers according to students progress? If they start that they won't have any teachers at North Aiken Ele. Teachers would have to pay to teach there.

I've been subbing in Columbia Co. and there is no increase after 15 classes there. It would help to have more money, but it's not the kind of job where you want people to do it just for the money. It's different from regular teaching in many ways and to say otherwise shows a lack of understanding of what those teachers do. As a parent, it also has the benefit of getting to see the world your child lives in daily. Adds perspective, supports kids - and helps my budget or I'd have to stop.

Well lets see what a little math tells us. The raise for Dr Bedded was $15K. That would have provided an extra teacher for 300 school days. I really wonder why they don't fire all the permanent teachers and hire only subs. This isn't really a bad idea, if subs are ok to teach sometimes why noy all the time?
