To swim or not to swim?
That’s one of the questions facing voters in Columbia County next Tuesday.
Monday night, county leaders held a public meeting to discuss funding an $18 million aquatic and tennis Center.
In Monday’s Good Question, many voters want to know if SPLOST money will be used to fund the project.
The proposed aquatic and tennis Center would not be funded with SPLOST money. That's why it's a separate ballot question.
It would be funded with a general obligation, or GO bond, repaid by a property tax increase of approximately $20 per $100,000 of property value.
"It being such a big ticket item and being something we never had before, we figured it was only fair to let voters decide if we wanted that type of facility in Columbia County," said Assistant to the County Administrator, Scott Johnson.
One of the reasons for Monday’s meeting is explain exactly what the aquatic center would be.
Some voters think it's a water park while others think it's just for competitive swimmers.
The aquatic center would be a 25 acre site located right off the interstate in Grovetown, with parking, walking tracks, spectator seating and lockers.
People living in Columbia County would have year round swimming with three pools.
They'd be used for general swimming, competitive swimming and even water aerobics.
In fact, one of the pools would be wheelchair accessible.
During the summer, people can use the outside water park complete with a lazy river and water slides.
Voters will have the ultimate say next Tuesday whether the proposal becomes a reality.
And if it does, the county is in talks with the Family Y about managing it.
The renewal of the SPLOST or one cent sales tax is also on the ballot in Columbia County.
