MARTINEZ, Ga. - It's getting chilly outside and that means some people are cranking up the heat.
Many of you may be wondering what causes that smoky scent after the first time you turn on the heat during the cooler months?
NBC Augusta 26 News went to Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue to track down the root of the smell.
Firefighters tell us that odor is from dust collected.
They say you should turn your heat on once a month to prevent dust buildup in the unit and get it checked before you heat things up.
"In 2008, we had 403,000 residential fires in the U.S. with 2700 deaths and 1300 injuries. This is why it's really important to have your unit checked. This is just from home heating alone," said Chief Danny Kuhlmann.
Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue also recommends getting your chimney cleaned before you light that first fire of the year.
