It kills more men than prostate cancer and more women than breast cancer....were talking about lung cancer. In this HealthyU segment, one of our viewers would like to know "what makes a person more likely to have lung cancer?"
What makes a person more likely to have lung cancer?
Increased age, smoking, exposure to second hand smoke, and exposure to radioactive gases, abestos and other air polliution.
WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS?
(Warning signs are not always present. Symptoms vary depending on where and how large the tumor actually is)
Small lesions and larger cancer growth may cause symptoms such as trouble breathing, shorthness of breath, wheezing, coughing or coughing up blood, pain is rare but may be in shoulder or chest area wiht nerve involvement, and throat involvement (hoarseness and problems swallowing)
WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE THE DOCTOR?
If you have: new constant cough or worsening existing cough, blood in sputum, repeated respiratory infections, chest pain, breathing problems such as shortness of breath or wheezing, unexplainable weight loss, poor appetite, and/or constantly feeling tired for no reason.
WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS?
Treatment depends on the type of lung cancer, the stage and whether or not it's spread.
Surgery, chemotherapy or radiation and supportive care for terminal cancer.
IS THERE SCREENING THAT COULD BE DONE TO DETECT LUNG CANCER?
Stop smoking.
Routine screening does not improve survival, so the American Cancer Society does not recommend routine screening.
