During the Olympics, NBC Augusta is sharing amazing stories about people in this area who are doing inspirational work in the community. We call them Augusta Gold Medalists.
Howard and Elouise Roary could be considered the hardest working couple in the CSRA.
They have worked for S&S Cafeteria for a combined 85 years!
Elouise is 76 and her job requires her to be on her feet all day, but she says she wouldn't have it any other way.
"If it wasn't for this job here, I'd probably be laying in the bed," she said.
Elouise Roary has worked at S&S Cafeteria in North Augusta for the past 40 years. And any of her peers will tell you she's still got it!
"She can outwork anyone else," said the store manager.
Across the river, at Augusta's S&S, is a 72-year-old who's showing no signs of slowing down on his job.
"If you sit down, you get lazy, tired, and don't want to do nothing," said Howard.
Howard Roary is Elouise's husband and together they've worked at S&S for 85 years. That may seem odd to some, but they say the company helped them put three kids through college!
"People say they don't pay, but you can make it. It's not how much you make. It's what you do with what you make," said Elouise.
Managers say their old school work ethic is an example to others. It's not just the food that keeps people coming back. Managers say it's Howard's attitude that keeps the lines full.
"Because of his courtesy and compassion to customers," said one customer. It's compassion and a heart of service they vow not to change.
The Roary's say they have no plans to retire anytime soon. They say they work to stay active.
