AUGUSTA, Ga. - Season three of NBC Augusta 26's Biggest Loser is underway and the men and women who are competing are already dropping weight. Ed Chavis says the turning point was losing a colleague to a heart attack and realizing his own health would keep declining if he didn't do something. "I have been carrying around all this weight since I was 10 years old," Chavis said. Chavis grew up in the church, his father was once the senior pastor at Lumpkin Road Baptist, where he serves as an associate pastor and music minister today. But every tradition is his life has not been a blessing. Chavis admits his longtime struggle with his weight is a burden. "My parents put me in Weight Watchers at 10 years old. I lost in that plan, but it didn't take long to gain it back. I started playing football and lost some of it, but coach didn't want me to lose too much because I played offensive line, he wanted me a little chunky." Chavis says the Biggest Loser competition is not only teaching him to live healthier, it'll also help him be a better minister. "I spend my life trying to help other people break addictive patterns in their life, relationships, issues, spiritual issues and it's time for me to get a hold of this in my own life." With prayer and support from his church family and friends, Chavis says he'll obtain the spiritual fruit of self-control and victory along with it. "I cannot wait until May when they announce my name as Augusta's Biggest Loser," he said. He admits the new diet and exercise routine is hard, but he's already lost 14 pounds which is motivating him. His goal is to lose at least 140 pounds by May.
