College Spending Habits

College students are faced with the difficult task of managing money, often for the first time. The problem is many don't know how to do that. Students learn quickly how many bills can come in a given month. What they say they don't learn as fast, is how to pay them off responsibly and even save. "You have all these bills to pay so when you get the money before you save jack it's gone," said student Kelechi Kejuba. "I run out of money because of unexpected costs," Clay Thompson admitted. Beth Armbruster works for a bookkeeping company that works with companies and individuals. She says it's clear from what she sees that bad money habits are formed early and are hard to break. Armbruster says most people have no idea how much money they spend every week, especially if they use credit cards. "I think there's a conscious decision when you take money out of your wallet that you have more of an idea where it's going," said Armbruster. Still Armbruster says unless people write it down, they have no idea that that cup of coffee each day could mean 20 bucks at the end of the week that could be going toward saving for a house or paying down debt.
