GQ: Are Tax Rebate Checks Taxable?

Several viewers want to know if the economic stimulus rebate checks are taxable.

The answer is no.

You will not owe tax on your rebate check when you file your 2008 federal income tax.

But the IRS recommends you keep a copy of the letter you receive from them listing the amount of your payment.

Something else the IRS wants to point out is that not everyone qualifies for the maximum payment of $600 per person or $1,200 for married couples.

The amount of your check is based on information provided in your 2007 income tax return.

Around the time you receive your payment, you will also receive a notice from the IRS explaining how it was calculated.

I am married and we only received $600.00 per couple filing jointly from the IRS. The information you are giving out says 600.00 per person and 1,200.00 for couples. This is not correct. Thank you.
