Trees can be an eyesore and a danger. It can also cost thousands of dollars to have them removed. But there’s one company that cuts them down for free.

Brown Tree Service makes its money by cutting down your tree and taking it to a lumber yard or mill.

"I got tired of these trees and I said would you mind coming over here and they said yeah," said Alfred Coleman, resident.

John Lambert is another customer who took advantage of the free tree cutting service. "Now we don't have the problem of pine tar falling all over the place," he said.

It's a matter of convenience for Coleman and Lambert. For Brown Tree Service, it's a matter of staying in business.

James Brown owns the business and says sometimes it's hard to make ends meet. His company has been in business for just a couple of years. In order to stay afloat, his crew goes through neighborhoods in the Augusta area looking for trees that need to be cut down.

Most of the time, it’s a free service for homeowners.

“It benefits me because if I can take the tree and then we get a load of a certain kind of wood, we take it to the mill and that’s how we make our money,” said Brown.

With the cost of diesel up to $4.55 a gallon, it's no wonder Brown Tree Service is trying to make extra money. Brown said his fuel bill runs from $900 to $1,000 a week.

Brown isn't too worried. He says business is slowly picking up.

“We’re trying to do this as cheap as we can for these people but some things we have to charge for,” said Brown.

Customers don't mind paying a little bit for a big problem.

Coleman said, "I moved here and I had a chance to get rid of them so it saves me time and work because they'll be gone, no pine cones."

Most of the time there's no charge for Brown Tree Service to cut down your tree. But, if there's extra work involved, like climbing trees that are too tall or getting rid of roots, there's a small charge.

Brown Tree Service covers areas from Georgia to North Carolina.
