Update: SC agencies ordered to cut spending by 3 percent

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - All state agencies are being ordered to cut their spending by 3 percent.

The Budget and Control Board on Tuesday ordered the reduction in
spending because of worries that the state's economy won't generate
as much revenue as officials had planned for the year.

Gov. Mark Sanford and legislative members of the five-member board disagreed on how to implement the cuts. Sanford wanted the money set aside, with lawmakers returning to Columbia to make targeted spending reductions.

But Sen. Hugh Leatherman of Florence, chairman of the Finance
Committee, said state law requires across-the-board reductions.

Several state agencies said last week that they already have frozen hiring.

Those include the Public Safety and Education
departments.
