Perdue: Tax grants "ineffective''

ATLANTA (AP)- As Georgia's budget woes have deepened, Gov.
Sonny Perdue has moved to freeze a $428 million grant program aimed
at lowering local property taxes.

If Perdue has his way, the thaw might not be coming anytime soon. The Republican governor said Tuesday the grants are "ineffective'' and have worked to fatten up local governments rather than providing homeowners with tax relief.

Perdue suggested he wants to look at "better ways'' to reduce
the rate of property tax growth.

He's likely to face stiff opposition from state lawmakers who fear elimination of the grants could push taxes higher. Perdue acknowledged on Tuesday that the issue is "politically nuclear''
for legislators who, unlike him, are facing re-election this fall.
