Port of Charleston rolling back rates for 3 months
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The Port of Charleston is giving an early Christmas present to shipping lines. The South Carolina State Ports Authority announced Wednesday it is providing an across-the-board five percent cut in contracted rates for container customers in Charleston. The cut is effective for the first three months of 2009. Authority president and chief executive officer Bernard S. Groseclose says the move is designed to help shipping lines facing tough economic times. He says it also will help companies maintain their present service and avoid cuts that could affect the economies of Charleston and South Carolina. The authority says container business through Charleston was down four percent from July to November when compared to the same time last year. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press.
