GIBSON, Ga. - The FDIC spent most of Monday at FirstCity Bank, calming fears and making arrangements for customers of Glascock County's only bank.

Things have calmed down since Sunday's town hall meeting. That's because most customers are being told their money is safe.

"Whenever you have a crisis in your community, everybody comes together and works together so we can handle some of the problems," said Glascock County Chairman Ant Griswell.

That's exactly what the city of Gibson is doing after the FDIC shut the doors of FirstCity Bank of Gibson on Saturday.

Monday, the FDIC came to the bank to answer questions and ease fears.

FDIC representatives are also working to make sure money gets back into the hands of customers.

"As we speak the checks are being prepared to be mailed out to the customers," said Griswell.

"Tomorrow we will mail out reconciling statements so people can see everything they had in the bank is accounted for," said Linda Beavers with the FDIC.

For those who need money on the spot, Queensborough National Bank and Trust in Louisville is ready to help.

"We've extended a loan, small loan for people, customers and businesses for a low rate just to be able to accommodate them, give them some money to work off of until they get their check," said Steve Thames with Queensborough National Bank and Trust.

Although help is available, some people still say the bank closing is a major inconvenience.

Diann Kitchens and her husband depend on his Social Security check.

With it being an automatic deposit into her former FirstCity bank account, Kitchens says she has to go back to the bank where the paperwork was originally filled out, hundreds of miles away.

"So, I have to go to the bank in McDonough which is south of Atlanta to take him up there where they can release it. They can't do that in Thomson," said Kitchens.

Again, bank customers can expect to see their checks by the end of the week.

Once they get those checks they'll be able to choose a bank from four towns; Wrens, Warrenton, Louisville or Sandersville, all within 20 miles of Gibson.

Customers' money is protected if they had $250,000 or less with FirstCity Bank.

If you had more than $250,000, you need to contact the FDIC.
