AUGUSTA, Ga. - Colder days and nights mean cranking up the heat, but it comes at a cost. For many, that price is too high.
In the winter, as the numbers on the thermostat go up, so does your bill.
That's why hundreds of people are taking advantage of the Energy Assistance Program.
"It really helps, it helps a lot to have this-it's wonderful,” said Sister Mary Havelock.
Havelock was one of hundreds who came to the Carry J. Mays Recreation Center to get help paying her heating bill this winter.
“We have a gas fireplace and little heaters so it's a big help for us," said Havelock.
So, do you qualify?
To get assistance, the bill needs to be in your name, you must be a U.S. citizen and your income must be at or below 160 percent of the poverty level for Georgia.
One person- $21,458
Two person- $28,061
Three person- $34,663
