It's the sales tax-free weekend for both Georgia and South Carolina. But before you spend your money, keep in mind some differences between the two states.
"South Carolina has a lesser tax than Georgia, so I come over here to do a little shopping," said Joan Scott, from Augusta.
But be careful! There are some differences between the states.
"In Georgia, you can't get any of your linens tax free, but here in South Carolina, governor has said tax free would be on all towels, all bedding, sheets, comforters," said Stephanie Miller, Belk area sales manager.
Another difference could raise a few "hairs."
"In Georgia, you can't get any of your hair accessories, here you can get ponytail clips, headbands, all that also tax free in South Carolina," said Miller.
But both states allow some unusual tax-exempt items for back to school shoppers like formal wear, tuxedos and wedding gowns. In Georgia, the price for each item must be less than a hundred dollars.
"Many of our garments are not under $100, if they were, like we have head pieces under 100 that counts as formal wear. Our formal shoes are under $100 that would count," said Jane Ellaissi, owner of Elegant Bridals in Augusta.
Still, why would these items be considered back to school necessities?
"You do have the girls going back to sorority dances, they're pledges, have social occasions, maybe that's part of the thought of going back to school." said Ellaissi.
Another difference between Georgia and South Carolina's tax free weekend, doesn't have much to do with school supplies. In South Carolina, you can stock up on costumes tax free. In Georgia, you're out of luck But Georgia does allow you an extra day to shop.
Still, if all this information has you confused, the best advice is to ask before you buy.
"All of our people at every register have that list. They can look at it and see exactly what suppose to be, so we're trying not to make mistakes, to give them exactly what law says," said Miller.
