The Edgefield County coroner tells NBC Augusta the son of a murder victim is a person of interest in the case.
Raymond Merriweather was found shot to death in his Edgefield home on Sunday.
And now investigators are questioning his son Phillip Merriweather. He has not been named as a suspect.
Investigators also think the victim was killed with a gun he owned, which is now missing from the home.
His son was arrested at the crime scene on Sunday for aggravated assault and he was still in jail as of Tuesday night.
Investigators say he is not cooperating.
Preliminary autopsy results released Monday show Raymond Merriweather was shot in the head, at least once.
His wife found him dead in their home in Trenton Sunday afternoon when she returned from church.
NBC Augusta spoke with Edgefield County investigators Monday. They said they do have quite a bit of evidence from the scene that could lead to an arrest.
Merriweather's body was found in the kitchen around 3:00 p.m. Sunday. Investigators tell NBC Augusta his wrists were bound by telephone wire and he had been shot in the head. They also believe whoever killed Merriweather acted alone.
Thurmond Burnett is the Edgefield County coroner. He told NBC Augusta whoever committed this murder may have known Merriweather on a personal level because there was no sign of forced entry.
"When his grandson left, he locked the door behind him and the door was still locked when the wife came in, so the only thing we can suspect is that he must have known them by letting them in," said Burnett.
The coroner also told NBC Augusta Merriweather suffered from blunt force trauma.
A full autopsy report should be available in the next few days.
Merriweather’s death is the first Edgefield County murder of 2008.
