A reserve deputy is in jail accused of raping a woman while on duty.

Isaac James is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct and first-degree burglary.

He worked for Bamberg County Sheriff's Office as a volunteer officer. Investigators say on June 18 after midnight, Deputy James went into the woman's apartment at Bamberg Villa while working security at the complex and forced her to have sex with him.

Investigators say he left her apartment and returned moments later forcing her to have sex with him a second time.

NBC Augusta spoke with James' mother who lives in that same apartment complex. She and another neighbor we spoke with say they don't believe these allegations.

"When I first heard it I didn't believe it because I know how I raised him. I know how I raised my children," said Eloise James, suspect's mother.

"He was a nice person. If you needed something he would help. I hope this gets turned around because he's a good person. People can lie on other people until the truth comes out," said Darlene Porter, neighbor.

This case has been handed over to South Carolina's Law Enforcement Division.

Bamberg County Sheriff Ed Darnell says James has been suspended from the volunteer position.

Darnell says James worked for the force for a few years and he
hasn't had any complaints made against him before this incident.
