She was trusted with children for more than a decade, but now, one Aiken County middle school teacher is facing several charges for an inappropriate relationship with a female student.
Last month, SLED investigators started looking into what they called an extremely close relationship between Shannon Fowler and a female student that dated back to the fall of 2008. Investigators say the allegations amounted to 22 pages worth of charges.
Shannon Fowler, a math teacher, has been responsible for educating Aiken County school children for the past 15 years. But she could spend the upcoming school year adding up the number of years she might spend behind bars if found guilty on the seven charges she faces.
According to the affidavit, Fowler began a relationship with a 14-year-old female student at Paul Knox Middle school where she taught.
Investigators say in March Fowler asked the student to hide their relationship, using an imaginary friend as an alibi. SLED investigators say the middle school teacher spoke with the student throughout the day in person and by phone and text messages. Conversations they say were sexual in nature.
She even encouraged the girl to skip class to spend time with her. The affidavit also shows Fowler discussed questions that were on the state's standardized test. Investigators say she also bought the student a cell phone during the relationship. All allegations one parent says she can't believe.
"I'm shocked. My daughter was going to have her this year and she's 14. That just sends your mind racing," said Julie Cockrell, Parent.
Fowler taught Julie Cockrell's son and next year, her daughter Jessica was going to have her for math. Cockrell says before these allegations, they heard nothing but great things about this middle school math teacher.
"All the kids like her. My daughter likes her. This was really shocking," said Cockrell.
But now she say she's glad this teacher was caught before she harmed someone else.
"It's scary. You are supposed to feel safe to have your kids at school. But now there are predators messing with your kids," said Cockrell.
An attorney for the South Carolina State Board of Education tells NBCAugusta her license will be suspended while they conduct their own investigation. A final decision about her teaching license will be made after her trial.
SLED handled this investigation because Fowler's husband is a former employee of the North Augusta Department of Public Safety.
