FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say deputies killed man who
was holding his ex-girlfriend's 13-year-old son hostage near
Florence.
Florence County deputies say they had to shoot 40-year-old
Thomas John Dick on Monday to protect the boy. The State Law
Enforcement Division is investigating.
Authorities say Dick was on bond from Hendersonville, N.C.,
where police say he beat his ex-girlfriend at a motel.
Investigators say Dick was not supposed to contact the woman,
but drove to her job Monday before barricading himself in her home
with her son.
Sheriff Kenney Boone says a SWAT team shot Dick after he refused
to surrender during the two-hour standoff.
