AUGUSTA, Ga.- Richmond County Narcotics investigators say they've locked up one of Augusta's biggest drug dealers. The arrest comes after a year long undercover investigation.
NBC Augusta 26 News was the first to bring you this story and we were the only TV station there when deputies made the arrest.
Judging by stacks of $100 bills and seven cars, some would say Carlos Hughes was a high roller.
But Richmond County Narcotics investigators say they busted his game after a year long undercover operation.
With help from the Drug Enforcement Agency and the FBI's Street Safe Task Force, investigators raided two homes in south Augusta, caught Hughes and say they found his pot of gold or pot of white powder.
They seized two kilograms of cocaine valued at $50,000, $250,000 in cash, and several cars.
"He's one of the biggest drug dealers we've been investigating right now. We knew he had operations in Augusta and his source is in Atlanta,” said Lt. Robert Partain, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators say Hughes would bring the drugs from Atlanta and distribute them to about 15 local drug dealers. But now that he's behind bars, they're hoping this arrest will reduce the problem.
"We're going to continue to have a drug problem but we've taken one of the major players out,” said Partain.
Richmond County Narcotics and the DEA will continue investigating this case. Hughes is currently charged with trafficking cocaine. NBC Augusta 26 News is told he will also face federal charges.
