AUGUSTA, Ga. - Investigators are trying to find out who killed a 79-year-old Augusta man Friday and tried to make it look like an accident.

Family members found Robert Smith dead in his backyard Friday night. They say that Smith's house on Kent Street was likely being burglarized when he arrived home.

Relatives say someone entered through the back door and tore through the house looking for something to steal. The only thing reported missing is Smith's red bicycle.

An autopsy Saturday in Atlanta revealed that Smith died of a head injury.

Relatives who couldn't reach him sent deputies to his house to check up on him.

"He was found in his backyard and what was weird about that was that he had a water heater laying across his back," said Investigator James Kelly, Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Family members say it looked like someone tried to make the murder look like an accident with the water heater falling on Smith.

Investigators won't name any suspects yet, but the family believes Smith knew his killer.

This is Richmond County Sheriff's Office’s 24th murder case of the year.
