WADLEY, Ga. - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into a deadly shooting in Jefferson County that involved a police officer.

Friday evening Jerry Conner was shot by police at the intersection of East Smith Street and North Main Street in Wadley Georgia. He later died.

“I heard the pops. Pop pop pop. And he fell there in the road,” Conner’s wife said.

She did not want to be identified but told 26 News that Friday afternoon she watched as her husband of 22 years lie in the street. He was shot after an altercation with the Wadley Police Department.

Conner's wife says officers were called to their street when Conner and one of their sons got into an argument. She shared pictures of her husband through the years with 26 News and told us recently Conner had been having some hard times.

“He's been drinking and there have been some family things in the past three years. He's lost 3 family members. His mother, his father and his brother. This may have been exactly what he wanted,” Conner’s wife said.

Police Chief Wesley Lewis says part time officer Patrick Paquette who also works for the Richmond County Board of Education was called as back up. He says when Paquette arrived at the scene Conner was in the street with a knife and started coming toward him.

“During that time they gave him multiple commands to drop the weapon which at that time Officer Paquette had to make the decision on using deadly force,” Lewis said.

Conner later died at the hospital. It's a fate his wife says he didn't deserve.

“Shooting him may have been necessary but not killing him. Why not the legs? Why not his foot? Why his heart?” she said.

“You're going to have different people saying this happened. That's why we called the GBI in to do a thorough investigation with out it being one sided,” Lewis said.

An investigation that's expected to take several weeks until then Officer Paquette will be on leave.

One of the patrol cars at the scene of the shooting did have a dash cam, but it was not turned on to capture anything during the incident.

Sure seems like when they tased Mr. Connor they could have shot him, not to kill but to have the knife down where they could have at that point rushed in and taken the knife. The man didn't deserve to die over this, but yes, being tazed, maybe more than once would have helped (in the right way). Was he going to toss a knife??? Then tazer him again, don't be a killer to a man that was only upset with his family and had left the site to go to the street to go home, but deputies arrived. So sad!!!!

Patrick Paquette Was fired from the warrenton police dept. in 1995 for disobeying orders, he was told to ride unarmed with the other officers until he attended the police academy . He was terminated when the chief discovered he had been carrying an unauthorized firearm. The chief caught considerable grief from the city council member who recommend him for hire. His POLICE carer should have ended then.

You only have one side of the story... and that is the side of the police. Imaigne if ms. Cathereine Johnson was not 90 years old... those police officers would have gotten away with murder... I ask that you look at both sides of the story- afterall- there is always 3 sides to a story- his, hers, and then the truth...you call for help and then you die! this type of scene is played over and over in the world that we live in... my condolences to the family..

Its simple use of force. Lawenforcement always stays one step above what a person is presenting to them. Presentation of deadly force (pulling your weapon out with verbal commands) then use of deadly force. All in all the officers did what had to be done cause at the end of the day they would like to go home to their family when something in this nature in presented to them at the time.

THE POLICE ARE TRAINED TO DISARM A CRIMINAL. I DON'T THINK A PERSON THAT COULD BARELY STAND UP WOULD POSE THAT BIG OF A THREAT TO 6 OR MORE OFFICERS.WHY WAS A PART TIME OFFICER, THE ONLY ONE TO SHOOT HIM? I HAVE SEEN 3 OR MORE OFFICERS TAKE A GUN WEILDING MAN DOWN ,AFTER TASING HIM. THEY COULD HAVE SHOT HIM .BUT THEY CHOOSE TO USE THEIR TRAINING PROPERLY. INSTEAD OF TAKING A LIFE ,THEY GAVE HIM A CHANCE TO GET MENTAL HELP AND GAVE A FAMILY THEIR LOVE ONE BACK. SOME OF THESE COPS NEED MENTAL HELP

If someone came at me with a knife, I would shoot to kill if I had a gun. If he's close enough to come at you with a knife, a shot to incapacitate instead of kill, could lead to getting a deadly stabbing. I suspect Officer Paquette made the right call. I don't know him professionally, but as a parent at one of the schools he has worked at, I have observed him to be honest and professional, going above and beyond the call of duty to do the right thing. My condolences to the family.

POLICE ARE TRAIN THE ARE TRAINED TO KILL. I THINK THAT THE SITUATION COULD HAVE BEEN DEALT WITH DIFFERENTLY. MAYBE SHOOTING HIM IN THE LEG WOULD HAVE GOTTEN HIM TO DROP THE KNIFE. HE NEEDED HELP AND HE PROBABLY DIDN'T KNOW WHERE TO START. IT HURTS TO LOSE 3 PEOPLE THAT YOU LOVE DEARLY. LOSING SOMEONE IS NOT EASY TO DEAL WITH IT TAKES TIME AND HELP.

Sorry Renee Jackson, but a 2" knife will kill you as quick as a 12" knife. Plus, police officers are trained to stop the threat, which is two center mass, one cranial vault. That translates to 2 in the chest, 1 in the brain. Pretty much stop anybody! I also feel bad for the family of both parties involved, but Mr citizen put himself in the situation and it was handled properly. Kudos to you Deputy Parquette and good shots!

stop and think about the situation on hand. place a man coming at you with a knife, drunk, what would you do? yes, you would defend yourself in order to live. in your mind this person was arm and dangerous and was coming at you! defense! I hate to read about police shooting someone and that person die, but it was decison that the policeman made and it will be with him the rest of his life. My consoles is with the man"s family. The truth will come out and justice will be serve. thanks

I was not at the scene when this incident happened, however it seems that excessive force was used. There were 6 patrol cars at the scene and the only officer who pulled the trigger was a part time officer. I question his training. The man who was shot at least twice had a 2 inch pocket knife! Come on!!! I find it hard to believe that deadly force was necessary!
