RIDGE SPRING, S.C.- Four people are in jail in connection to a deadly home invasion in Ridge Spring. The Aiken County Sheriff's Office says one of the shooters is only 15-years-old.
Investigators say they're working to figure out what the relationship was between the man who was killed and the four who shot him on Whispering Pines Road.
"This was a target, it's not a random break-in, there was some relationship there that the suspects knew there was something in that residence that they wanted," said Captain Troy Elwell from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators say four people broke into 34-year-old Jerry Tyler's home, went into his bedroom and shot him to death.
His wife and six kids were in the house at the time, none of them were injured.
When police arrived, they say they found Tyler on the ground in front of his house.
"We believe the robbery may have been drug related, although we didn't find anything in the residence to connect it to that," Capt. Elwell said.
Neighbors who lived near Tyler say the home invasion and murder was shocking.
"I'm shocked, this is not the type of neighborhood to have events like this," Tyler’s Neighbor, Brittany Elam said.
During the shooting, investigators say one of the four shooters, 40-year-old Terrance Riley was shot accidentally.
He is now in critical condition at the MCGHealth.
Investigators say his son was the 15-year-old shooter. Seventeen-year-old Islam Dunn and 22-year-old Draton McFadden were also arrested.
Investigators say they found the four at a family member's house about three miles away on Vanest Road.
The family member had called 911 thinking Riley’s injuries were from a different incident, according to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.
When authorities arrived, they were brought into custody and charged with murder, burglary in the first degree, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime and attempted armed robbery.
“More charges may be pending depending on the status of the suspect that is currently in MCG Hospital,” Capt. Elwell said.
"Ya don't know what to expect from day to day, so you have to stay prayed up,” Tyler’s neighbor, Brittany Elam said.
Investigators have not decided if the 15-year-old will be charged as an adult or as a juvenile.
As of Friday night, he's being held in South Carolina's Juvenile Detention Center.
Capt. Elwell says this is the third murder in Aiken County this year.
