NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - Imagine being on vacation and finding out your home's been destroyed by a fire. That's what happened to one Aiken County woman. The sheriff's office is calling that fire suspicious.

Hateful graffiti was spray painted on all sides of the home. Investigators say they don't believe this was a hate crime, but do believe this homeowner was targeted.

I can't even tell where the kitchen was. The stove was outside. I see rags from the pantry outside. We can't tell what anything is on there," Demetria Abraham, homeowner.

Demetria Abraham returned after family vacation to a home that's now unrecognizable.

“It's completely gone. Just the front shell of my home is standing,” said Abraham.

NBC Augusta 26 News was there the night of the fire. Through the smoke, obscene words spray painted on the wall can be seen.

“When I walked around and read all of that, I said, 'who would say such things? Who could do that?'" said Abraham.

As Abraham walked around the home she built 11 years ago, she can't help but wonder, why?

"Just why? Maybe the graffiti, but why did they have to destroy the home that my family and I live in," said Abraham.

When asked the tough question about rebuilding, she finally had an answer.

“Yes, we want to rebuild,” said Abraham.

Fire investigators are still at the home trying to figure out how and where the fire started. 26 News will keep following this story.
