AUGUSTA, Ga. - At least one car is broken into every day in Augusta according to incident reports filed with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
Most days it’s several cars either stolen or damaged and robbed.
Broken glass lies in and around 88-year-old Adelaide Henderson’s Cadillac after it was broken into.
"I don't know, I don't go out at night so, I really don't know,” Henderson says.
She doesn't know why people broke into her car, but she does know she can't sleep at night.
"I haven't slept in two nights, you can look at me and tell,” Henderson said.
Henderson is cautious after someone jumped over her seven-foot fence, broke into her car and busted the steering column.
Police say the intruders were trying to steal her car.
"It's everywhere, it’s all over Augusta,” Henderson said. "Time is changing, they don't have any jobs, and they don't have money to feed their families with."
Henderson has lived on Chestnut Lane for 57 years. She says the neighborhood is a lot different than it used to be. Now she's scared of the people who live around her.
"It's awful, it’s terrible, I try to be nice to them,” Henderson said.
Not too long ago, Henderson paid for a security system and to have the fence installed. She wonders how the intruders expected to get out once they started the car.
“I'm not just scared for me; I'm scared of what I might to do them: shoot them, kill them,” Henderson said.
Cautious or not, Henderson says she's one 88-year-old woman that shouldn't be messed with.
Henderson tells NBC Augusta 26 News her house is under a neighborhood watch.
Officers say those usually help reduce crime in troubled communities.
