NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – The name of a man shot and killed outside a home in North Augusta Monday night has been released.

The Aiken County Coroner's Office says Paul Joseph Lirley, 35, of Marvin Drive, Aiken was shot in what appears to be a drug deal gone bad.

The coroner says Lirley was pronounced dead at the scene on Weston Street.

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office is calling this a homicide.

Investigators got the call around 7:30 p.m. after witnesses say they heard several gunshots.

NBC Augusta 26 News spoke with the next door neighbor who heard those shots and ran outside to find Lirley lying on the ground. He says he helped Lirley’s wife call 911.

"I went out the back door and I saw a guy run across the road. I heard a scream. I went out front and heard a woman start crying so I ran over there and she said her husband had been shot so I helped her call the cops," said neighbor Casey Tyre.

Other neighbors say they hear gunshots all the time.

Amy Harkins lives down the street and says she's not surprised by what happened.

"We hear gunshots three to four times a week. It can be daylight or dark. It's worse on the weekends and we need more police out here,” said Harkins.

The shooter is still on the loose and was last seen getting into a white Oldsmobile Alero with dark tinted windows.

What is going to have to happen for the North Augusta sheriffs department to help us. Not everyone in this neighborhood is a drug addict some of us are law abiding citizens.

I feel so safe in Aiken knowing that my sheriff, Mike Hunt, is out fighting fires for Clearwater while people are getting shot throughout the county.

How many deaths will it take before North Augusta Police start monitoring more closely. That woman is more than lucky she has neighbors like she does. But there are many cases in which young men like Casey aren't there to assist.
