Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has called on black Americans to be role models. He addressed the NAACP national convention in Ohio Monday night.

The country's first black presumptive presidential nominee addressed the nation's largest black organization, undaunted by criticism that he's spent too much time dressing down black America.

Sen. Barack Obama says "when we are taking care of our own stuff, then a lot of other folks are gonna be interested in joining up and working with us to take care of America's stuff."

He audience at the NAACP National Convention in Cincinnati obviously did not share the views of Jesse Jackson who's in hot water for speaking frankly into the hot mikes at the Fox News Channel.

But Obama stood pat, demanding blacks demand more of themselves.

Sen. Obama said "no matter how much money we invest in our communities...None of it will make a difference at least not enough of a difference if we also at the same time don't seize more responsibility in our own lives."

Each argument for personal responsibility was met with thunderous approval which Obama's rival, John McCain, hopes to get when he speaks here on education Wednesday.

re: Daisy - The New Yorker magazine cover was just racism and hate mongering that they want to pass off as satire. They know people are already scared of anything Muslim or Islam-related and putting Obama into that context will ultimately hurt him in the election. These magazine publishers aren't dumb, they know exactly what they are doing with this being an election year.

As a South African, I would like to encourage everyone of you from NAACP to join Senator Obama. His win will be a win for the African Continent and the peace loving people around the Globe

We need to know that the world is always looking at us in a negative way. And anything we do or don't do with proven facts are going to be distarded. We need to pay more attention to how we look to the entire world. We can change everything people think about us but we have to be willing to put the time in. Not just the fathers and mother but our children need to know they have a responsibility to hold up a good name for themselves as well as their future families. It is on us to do better.

Regarding the New Yorker magazine cover,..."This re-emphasizes the need for more black-owned media. This election has been distorted because there are no black voices to counter those of Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity. Hence, our voices are either muted or distorted, and we end up having to "shoosh" one another to ensure that the media doesn't find out that black people really have something to be angry about. That kind of sickens me."

I agree with Senator Obama...our black t.v./music/movie stars and even religious ministers like Jesse Jackson should realise that the most powerful component to making a difference is how we live and conduct ourselves everyday!
