Democratic U.S. Senate runoff Tuesday

ATLANTA (AP) - Democratic U.S. Senate contenders Vernon Jones
and Jim Martin sparred in their final debate in advance of
Tuesday's runoff.

Jones on Sunday night defended his temperament, which critics
have questioned. And Martin said that he's built on his 2006 loss
for lieutenant governor and is capable of winning a statewide race
this time around.

The half-hour debate was sponsored by WAGA TV Fox 5 in Atlanta.

Jones and Martin were the top vote getters in the five-man July
15 primary. Jones took 40 percent of the vote in that contest and
Martin won 34 percent.

The winner will face Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss and
Libertarian Allen Buckley in November.
