13-year-old Richie Mullaney knows what he likes. He's into computer games, and loves his sports. "I like Maurice Jones Drew." He's also die hard Gator fan. "Tim Tebow!," said Richie. Another interest--former U.S. Presidents? "George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and I really liked Ronald Reagan," said Richie Mullaney. You heard it. Richie Mullaney doesn't play around when it comes to politics. As a self-proclaimed Republican, and that's because he's too young to officially register, this seventh grader has his sights set on the political arena. "I entered a YouTube contest so I could win a trip to the Republican National Convention and I explained why I am a Republican of 2008," said Richie. Now he's one of five Republican finalists in the country telling the world why he's a Republican in 2008. The contest is through YouTube Election 2008 internet campaign. There are ten contestants overall since the contest is representing both sides. Either "I want to be a Democrat 08," or in Mullaney's case, Republican. It's not hard to feel the GOP vibe from Richie. His bedroom has Republican mementos all over the place. Richie has a John McCain screensaver on his computer. Tucked away on a bookshelf, there's a picture of President Bush at JaxPort propped behind a model of the White House. And next to a Florida Gator stuffed animal, there's a picture of Richie, his father, and McCain, again. "Why do I want to be a Republican?" he asks in his YouTube contest video. "I have very conservative views like cutting taxes, cutting spending, drilling offshore, appointing fair supreme court justices, and things like that," said Mullaney. To say he's passionate is definitely an understatement. Driven and determined, this kid is ready to make a difference. "I wanted to get involved because I know that the next president not only will affect my parents but it will affect me too," said Richie. The love for politics started five years ago when his mom picked up a book on presidents at a book fair. When he grows up he wants to be a politician. "I think you can really make a difference if you try hard enough." He's certainly talking like one in his YouTube pitch. He's also single (we had to ask since the world is watching his YouTube clip-people may inquire). Richie is going into the seventh grade at Episcopal High this fall. But before classes start he has his eyes on a little trip to Minnesota. He'll find out later this week. "I think that would be a lot of fun." Voters can cast their ballots on YouTube for their favorite video until the noon deadline on Wednesday. There is a link to the YouTube voting booth on this page. The winner will be announced Thursday, and gets a trip to the convention and a day with the nominated presidential candidate.
