Labor Day weekend doesn't just mean grilling out and kicking back. For the 5th straight year it's meant playing a little basketball and for a good cause.
The 5th Annual Barber Ball is a basketball tournament with some pretty high stakes. Those involved were competing for awesome prizes and bragging rights all while helping others.
“I'm home for Labor Day playing basketball,” said tournament participant Reggie Cummings.
He wants to win it all at this year’s tournament.
“It's an annual event, all basketball, barbershops, beauty shops anyone that wants to put a team together,” event organizer, John Milton said.
Last year Cummings' team came close to being crowned champion.
“We came out last year played, placed 2nd place now we're here to defend our title and hopefully win it all,” Cummings said.
But there is more to the event than just bragging rights, a big trophy and prizes. Players and everyone involved get to give back too.
“Every year we pick different charities. Last year it was diabetes, year before that prostate cancer this year we switched it around to breast cancer,” Milton said.
Milton owns Jay's Place Barber Shop. He said the idea for the tournament came to him five years ago.
“The idea came from me and the good Lord. The Lord put it to me and I had to put it to work,” Milton said.
Now he is working overtime to make sure the tournament is a continued success by keeping everyone guessing.
“This year we've got many surprises,” Milton said.
Surprises like gas gift cards up to $100. But there is one prize that Milton says tops them all.
“A brand new car,” he said.
And win or lose Cummings is happy to be with friends for the holiday weekend.
“It's a good tournament. It brings the community together,” he said.
Cummings’ team didn't win the tournament Sunday. It was the Showcase Sports Basketball team that took home the championship trophy and $700 in prize money.
