Miss Georgia gives up crown

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - A second Miss Georgia has been crowned in
two days.

One day after winning the title Saturday night at the annual pageant in Columbus, Gwinnett County school teacher Kristina Higgins relinquished the post, now filled by the runnerup, Emily Cook, a Marietta law student.

Higgins said she stepped down because her responsibilities as a
middle school teacher would not leave her time she would need to serve as Miss Georgia.

Cook was informed Sunday that she was the winner after Higgins
turned down the prize.

The 22-year-old Cook is a recent graduate of the University of
Miami and had been accepted into University of Georgia's Law
School. Instead she'll be competing for the Miss America crown in
January in Las Vegas.

First...."Higgins said she stepped down because her responsibilities as a middle school would not leave her time she would need to serve as Miss Georgia." Well if I were a "middle school" I would probably have too many responsibilities too! And second...why did she even join the contest? What a waste of time!

How stupid! Why even participate if you don't want to win? What a waste of time.

What I consider a waste of time is to turn down acceptance into the state law school and an opportunity to excell as a Georgia woman in the law profession in exchange for a short moment of glory as a Barbie doll for the media and cosmetic industry. If she doesn't make miss America, and the math odds are she won't, she will be soon forgotten.

to JOMO: As a part of the Miss America organization, Miss Georgia is a scholarship pageant. So while you want to try and belittle a program that is the largest provider of scholarships to young women those that are informed will know that she is bettering herself. Do you hate yourself so much to want others not to succeed?

Who cares about Miss Georgia or Miss America? They don't do anything to change the world. It's nothing but a beauty contest for stupid young women. Perfect example: Ms. South Carolina. Enough said! Where's my prize? lol...now before you all bash me on what I just posted, I do realize that perhaps 10% of the women who are crowned have some degree of intelligence...BUT, what do crowned women actually do? I can't find answers on Google for the life of me! Volunteers do more than Miss anything!

I have to agree. She knew beforehand what her current commitments were. She knew from previous competition (placing second last year, I believe ) what the commitments would be for a pageant winner. I'm sorry, but the PR excuse stinks to me. It sounds honorable but it masks a more private reason. You don't waste your time, others time, and take the place of someone else who could have been a contender only to walk away in flash after a 12 hour reflection of time conflict. I don't buy it.

to James : The example you mention "Perfect example: Ms. South Carolina. Enough said!" is from a teen contestant in the Miss USA program, not the Miss America program which is a scholarship program that has been helping young women better themselves for decades. You need to Google some more and realize the difference before commenting on something you know nothing about.
