Michael Jackson fans gather at Apollo Theater
NEW YORK (AP) - Fans are gathering hours early for a public tribute to Michael Jackson at Harlem's Apollo Theater, the fabled venue that helped make a 9-year-old Jackson a star. Thousands are expected to pay their respects at the theater, which will let them in 600 at a time to listen to his music, watch a video tribute and leave flowers and memorabilia. The event is set to start at 2 p.m., but many people are already there, dancing as they wait in line. Fans began converging on the Apollo as soon as Jackson died Thursday in Los Angeles, and it has continued to serve as an impromptu memorial site. The pop icon's ties to the theater go back to 1967, when The Jackson 5 won the Apollo's Amateur Night. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
