Preliminary CRCT Scores Raise Concerns

Unofficial results of Georgia's 2008 Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) are raising concerns for the state.

Some school systems have received results and have raised concerns about low scores in Grade 8 Mathematics and Grades 6 and 7 Social Studies.

State Superintendent Kathy Cox says even though statewide results aren't in yet, it appears only 20-30 percent of 6th and 7th grade students passed the Social Studies Exam. Preliminary results show around 60 percent of 8th graders passed the Mathematics test.

It could be a couple of weeks before results are in for all counties.

NBC Augusta is working to get more information about the CRCT scores and will have it for you tonight on NBC Augusta News at Six.

Why go to school. Why not waite untill the end of the year and ace the crct and the high school graduation test. These test should not determine if a child is promoted to the next grade. It should be a measuring tool. The school system is lazy. LETS TEST EVERYONE.I BET HALF OF THEM CANT PASS THE TEST THEY GIVE OUR KIDS.

Parents join together and refuse to let your child retake the test. What would the state do with 1/2 of it's 8th graders repeating? There is already a teacher shortage. School systems would have to make changes because there would not be room or staff for this many kids. That is how to make DOE pay attention to how crazy it is to base everything on one test.

The CRCT has always had a validity problem. The questions are created by teachers on a first come basis, NOT the best teachers in the field. There are not enough checks by impartial people who understand how to match a test to state standards. When you have an increase in Iowa Scores and a decrease in CRCT scores, there is a need to check the validity of one or both tests.

At least a 50% drop in social studies, a 25% drop in math grades 3, 4, 5, and 8. Overall gains across the state on national Iowa Test for same grades. Do you think we have a validity problem Atlanta?
