Atlanta airport paid $32,000 in fines for dirty generators

ATLANTA (AP) - Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
has paid Georgia $32,000 in fines for operating emergency power
generators that produced too much smog-generating air.

A proposed consent order published this week by the state
Environmental Protection Division also will require the airport to
pay $1,000 for each hour a dirty generator operates.

The fine applies through the end of smog season Sept. 30.

The latest order was issued because airport management failed to
meet repair deadlines and maintain operating records for the
generators.

Federal Aviation Administration rules require the airport to use
emergency generators when thunderstorms occur in the area in case
the power goes out. The backup power ensures airplanes can continue
to land safely.

Airport officials say the diesel-powered generators now in
compliance with air quality regulations.
